Project Icarus: A review of local interstellar medium properties of relevance for space missions to the nearest stars

چکیده

I review those properties of the interstellar medium within 15 light-years of the Sun, which will be relevant for the planning of future rapid (vZ0.1c) interstellar space missions to the nearest stars. As the detailed properties of the local interstellar medium (LISM) may only become apparent after interstellar probes have been able to make in situ measurements, the first such probes will have to be designed conservatively with respect to what can be learned about the LISM from the immediate environment of the Solar System. It follows that studies of interstellar vehicles should assume the lowest plausible density when considering braking devices, which rely on transferring momentum from the vehicle to the surrounding medium, but the highest plausible densities when considering possible damage caused by the impact of the vehicle with interstellar material. Some suggestions for working values of these parameters are provided. This paper is a submission of the Project Icarus Study Group. & 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Physical Properties of the Local Interstellar Medium

The observed properties of the local interstellar medium (LISM) have been facilitated by a growing ultraviolet and optical database of high spectral resolution observations of interstellar absorption toward nearby stars. Such observations provide insight into the physical properties (e.g., temperature, turbulent velocity, and depletion onto dust grains) of the population of warm clouds (e.g., 7...

Advanced Solar- and Laser-pushed Lightsail Concepts

Beam-pushed propulsion systems, such as solarlaser-, or microwavepushed sails, allow the possibility of fuel-free propulsion in space. This makes possible missions of extremely high delta=V, potentially as high as 30,000 km/sec (0.1c), which is required for an fly-by mission to a nearby star. This project analyzed the potential use of dielectric thin films for solar and laser sails. The advanta...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Project Icarus: Preliminary Thoughts on the Selection of Probes and Instruments for an Icarus-style Interstellar Mission

The Project Icarus study [1, 2] is tasked with designing an interstellar space vehicle capable of making in situ scientific investigations of a nearby star and its accompanying planetary system. This paper presents an initial consideration the range of probes and scientific instruments that will be required in order for Project Icarus to fulfill its scientific mission. It is important to realiz...

The Deuterium-to-oxygen Ratio in the Interstellar Medium

Because the ionization balances for H I, O I, and D I are locked together by charge exchange, the deuterium-to-oxygen ratio, D/O, is an important tracer for the value of the D/H ratio and for potential spatial variations in the ratio. As the D I and O I column densities are of similar orders of magnitude for a given sight line, comparisons of the two values will generally be less subject to sys...
